Join Us for a Birds of a Feather at OSCON During APTS

As the discussion and debate continues to heat up around the relevance of industry standards when faced with Open Source efforts, DMTF has been given the unique opportunity to participate in the Birds of a Feather (BoF) session titled, "Open Standards vs. Open Source" on Tuesday, July 22, at the Open Source Convention (OSCON). The event also happens to be in Portland, Ore. the same week as DMTF’s Alliance Partner Technical Symposium (APTS) and will be moderated by DMTF President Jeff Hilland.

This BoF will present the ideal forum for discussion and help carve a path forward to see if and/or how both groups can work together. There are several examples of how standards organizations are already working with Open Source including:
• DMTF’s ‘dual path’ development of the Cloud Auditing Data Federation standard, which is part of Celiometer in Open Stack
• DMTF’s Cloud Management Working Group is starting to work with OW2 Consortium’s Sirocco effort around the Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface as an interoperable cloud interface standard
• SNIA’s Cloud Data Management Interface represents a potential similar effort for cloud storage

However, questions remain. Are these the right ways forward? Can Open Source and Open Standards work together? Are there other paths that may be better? Does documenting an existing Open Source implementation allow Open Source the flexibility to evolve? Does implementing an existing standard represent a viable path? Can simultaneous development really work? Does the standards process need to change? Please join us to discuss these important issues and more.

The session is free, open to both OSCON and APTS attendees and  there is no need to formally sign up. Be sure to check the list of prescheduled BoFs online as the event approaches or check the schedule board onsite near registration at the Oregon Convention Center for topics and locations.
